This paper discusses the occurrence and control of M. avium in drinking water distribution systems. Eight sites were selected for full-scale sampling based on source water type, assimilable organic carbon (AOC) and biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC), treatment processes and post disinfectant type. Samples were collected monthly for eighteen consecutive months at all sites from the plant/well effluent, a distribution system mid-point and dead-end site. Raw water samples were collected for the six surface water sites. Samples were analyzed for various water quality parameters including disinfectant residuals, turbidity, temperature, alkalinity, pH, metals, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, coliform and HPC levels.
