Many water purveyors have landscaped their facilities using water conserving designs with climate appropriate plants and efficient irrigation equipment. Many agencies also have established demonstration gardens where their customers can see climate appropriate landscapes and learn about water efficient landscape principals. While it appears that a gradual shift from bluegrass to climate appropriate landscapes is emerging, most water purveyors would like to increase the public's awareness of the benefits of appropriate landscapes and thus increase efficient use of water. This paper describes how the Goleta Water District of Santa Barbara, California, seized an opportunity to assist with community-wide median landscaping. The dozens of beautiful climate appropriate medians now provide individuals, community groups and local governments with multiple benefits. This cooperative private/public community improvement project may serve as a model for other conservation-minded communities. The cooperative agreements and other useful documents are included.
