This paper discusses the technical justification of the proposal of criteria on minimum qualities demanded for the reuse of treated effluents in Spain. Criteria selection was based on justification presented by the Reuse Subcommission of Commission 5 of the Spanish Association of Water Supply and Sanitation in the 18th Technical Meetings held in Alicante in May 1998, as well as the codes and guidelines existing at the national and international level (EPA, France, WHO, etc.) and those prepared by regional governments in Spain (Catalonia, Balearic Isles and Andalusia).
