The cities of Cocoa Beach, Vero Beach, and Cocoa each have water reclamation facilities that border the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) in the coastal area of east central Florida. Even though this region is blessed with more rainfall (about 50 inches/year) than many other portions of the nation, there is a high demand for irrigation water that continues to grow with new development. Each reclamation facility faces excess demand during the dry season and the additional challenge of handling excess reclaimed water flows during the wet season. This paper discusses how these facilities chose not to use injection wells or created wetlands to handle excess flows but chose different approaches to address the seasonal pressures on their water reclamation systems.
