This paper summarizes and concludes the following: 1) The Floridan Aquifer in South Florida provides an alternative source of water that can be developed to meet municipal needs. 2) The raw water quality of the Floridan is such that reverse osmosis treatment is needed to render the quality of the finished water to an acceptable level. 3) With the onset of stricter regulations many municipalities will be forced to use alternate methods of treatment. Membrane treatment is fast becoming popular because of its efficiency in removing organic precursors and TDS. 4) RO treatment of the Floridan Aquifer can provide a source of water that can be used to augment existing water supplies and meet stricter trihalomethane and disinfection byproduct limits. 5) The Floridan Aquifer may prove feasible as an alternate source of water to many municipalities and should be evaluated in water supply planning studies. 6) The unit cost of treating waters from the Floridan Aquifer was higher than conventional methods. However, the finished water quality of membrane treatment may augment conventional treatment and offset the higher cost of treatment in many cases.
