Fluid mechanics and mass transfer studies have been made on a channel with one porous wall to understand the underlying physical processes that govern concentration polarization and fouling in membrane water treatment systems. Computer simulations of solute mass transfer and particle trajectories in membrane filters are presented and discussed in the context of potable water treatment. Inertial effects are shown to be important for large colloidal particles in hydrodynamic conditions that may exist in a reverse osmosis or an ultrafiltration module. However, permeation drag forces dominate in microfiltration and control particle deposition in such systems. First passage time values obtained from microfiltration experiments in which an pulse of a suspension is introduced into a channel bounded by one porous wall, are compared to values calculated using the mathematical model developed by Altena and Belfort. Good correlation between the two is reported.
