The objectives of this work were to: study factors that affect algae removal in conventional treatment; and compare the algae removal effectiveness of conventional treatment with that of microsand-enhanced flocculation (MEF). Conventional coagulation experiments were designed to compare algae removal with alum and ferric sulfate at the following conditions: equal streaming current values; and equimolar metal ion additions. Furthermore, jar tests were conducted to evaluate the effects of coagulation pH and anionic flocculant aid dose. Algae removal was compared for conventional coagulation and MEF at pH 6 with alum and ferric sulfate at doses that led to charge neutralization as determined by charge titrations. Includes 14 references, tables, figures.
