With an increasing responsibility to operate more efficiently, municipal utilities are recognizing the benefits of information technology (IT) and information management. The Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) is responding to this challenge through the implementation of a full-featured network and the utilization of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to address the needs of multiple operating groups. The system is comprised of: WAN/LAN, Wide Area and Local Area Network; LIMS, Laboratory Information Management System; Treatment Information System; and, Industrial Pretreatment Information System. The implementation of this integrated data management system has resulted in a number of HRSD-wide efficiencies including: elimination of repetitive data reporting tasks, decreased business unit segregation, and streamlined internal routing of data.
