This paper reports on Solid Phase Micro Extraction (SPME) and GC/MS analysis which has been shown to accurately identify geosmin and methylisoborneol (MIB) down to detection levels of 1 ppt. The method provides a rapid and reliable means of monitoring several taste and odor compounds in source and finished water. Preparation is less complicated and analysis time is significantly reduced. The SPME method does not require methylene chloride and so reduces laboratory waste and hazard exposure. Results can be available in less than 2 hours from time of sample collection. Twelve to fourteen samples can be run in an eight hour period. The SPME method affords a utility the opportunity to react proactively to changing levels of taste and odor compounds. The detection limit of the method is an order of magnitude below reported human thresholds for the two common taste and odor compounds, geosmin and MIB. Results can be obtained in a few hours which allows treatment changes to be implemented in a timely fashion. This method has allowed the Tampa Water Department to evaluate taste and odor control options both at the bench and in pilot facilities.
