Filtration is one of the main barriers for microbial and pathogen control at surfacewater treatment plants. Although the purpose and design of filtration in water treatment is well understood, optimization of the design and operation of filters for maximum production of high quality drinking water often is not. Many factorscan affect filter performance and productivity in a water treatment plant, including coagulation performance, preoxidation, filtration aids, filter loading rates, and temperature. This paper discusses each of these factors. Case studies from three pilot testing programs are used to show how differences in filter design and pretreatment can affect the productivity and performance of filters. Includes tables, figures.
