A 12-month pilot study for the City of San Diego, California, demonstratedthat filter rates could be increased from the current state of California limit of 6 gallons per minute/square foot (gpm/sf) to 10 gpm/sf and still meet stringent filtered water quality goals including turbidity less than 0.1 NTU and particle removal. In addition, ozone was found to measurably reduce filtered water turbidity, enhance particle removal, and extend filter run length by as much as 20%, in particular, when treating a poorer quality alternative local source. The pilot study also evaluated several impacts associated with converting to ozone including reduced chlorination byproducts, bromate formation and control, biodegradable organic levels, and high rate biological filtration. This paper highlights a number of key elements that other utilities might find helpful when considering innovative treatment approaches. Includes 6 references, tables, figures.
