When confronted with odor problems in their water, publicwater supply systems will typically analyze for geosmin and MIB (2-methylisoborneol). Taste and odor problems, however, can be significantly more complex and may not be due to the presence of these two compounds. A broad spectrum analysis needs to be developed for analytes which cause taste and odor to aid water systems in trying to solve mysterious taste and odor outbreaks. In recent years, analysis for geosmin and MIB has become more cost effective due to the use of Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) techniques. The combination of SPME and enhanced ion trap technologies are an excellent platform for broad spectrum method development. Sensitivity is absolutely critical since many odorants have sub parts per billion and parts per trillion odor threshold values. This paper discusses the use of SPME combined with selected ion storage (SIS) techniques to concentrate ions in the ion trap. Method validation in terms of calibration, precision analysis/accuracy, and method detection limits are presented. Factors affecting the extraction of analytes from the headspace are also addressed. Includes 4 references, tables, figures.
