Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) provides water to Bostonand 42 other communities in eastern and central Massachusetts. The water is generally of very high quality, although its naturally low pH and alkalinity make it quite corrosive. Based on 2 rounds of sampling conducted in 1992 for worst-case tap water samples collected as per US EPA standards, it was found that 47% of these samples exceededthe Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) Lead Action Level of 0.015 mg/L. Copper was found to be below the action level. This paper describes MWRA's Lead and Copper Corrosion Control Program which involved raising the pH to 9.0 and the alkalinity to 30 mg/L. During the course of the Program there have been a number of water quality improvements in the distribution system which are also discussed. Includes figures.
