This paper describes a detailed examination of the degradation of the herbicide atrazine with and without the addition of hydrogen peroxide and with either a low-pressure (monochromatic emission at 254 nm) or a medium-pressure (broadband emission over the 200-300 nm range) UV lamp. The goal is to determine which technology is optimum for the degradation of atrazine. In this study, conducted in parallel at Duke University and Bolton Photosciences Inc., synthetic water samples spiked with atrazine at a level of ~100 ppb (which represents 100x analytical detection limit), with and without hydrogen peroxide, were irradiated with the output of a 12.4 W low- or 1 kW medium- pressure mercury lamp until a 2 log decay of the initial concentration of atrazine was achieved. Along with the change of the atrazine concentration, other parameters, such as absorption properties of the irradiated water over the 200-300 nm range, and the H2O2 concentration (where appropriate), were monitored for various exposure times (UV doses applied) during the irradiation period. From the decay curve of the concentration of atrazine, the photolysis rate constants were determined. Includes 10 references, figures.
