Need Help?
The selection of analytical methods is a critical part of environmental monitoring program objectives usually influence criteria for the monitoring program. Limitations of analytic techniques (e.g., sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy, precision, etc.) often determine the capability and evaluative power of the entire program, and hence proper selection of analytical methods is paramount. However, there are literally thousands of methods available for environmental analysis. To help with method selection on a project need basis, the National Environmental Methods Index (NEMI) is being developed under the guidance of the Methods and Data Comparability Board (MDCB), a FACA-chartered, collaborative panel, having representation from the federal, state and private sectors. NEMI is a web-based searchable compendium containing chemical, physical, radiochemical, microbiological and biological method summaries. It will be available to the public at the beginning of 2002, without charge. This initial version will only contain a few hundred method summaries and this will grow significantly over time. NEMI provides rapid communication and comparison of critical parameters of methods for use with methods selection and (or) methods modification and data comparability. This information, in a like format, will make methods comparability for interagency use, as well as use by the general public, quick and cost effective. Includes figures.
