A pilot study was conducted to evaluate disinfection byproduct precursor removal with granular activated carbon (GAC) for a proposed 30-million gallons per day surface water treatment plant. Prepilot rapid small-scale column tests (RSSCT) were performed to select GAC types for pilot testing. Two of the GACs used in the RSSCT were tested in post-filtration GAC columns during a six-month pilot study. A comparison was made of the RSSCT column and pilot column total organic carbon (TOC) breakthrough curves to determine how well the RSSCT predicted TOC removal at pilot scale. The feasibility of using the RSSCT for further testing of full-scale design alternatives was evaluated. Includes 5 references, tables, figures.
