This paper presents interim results of an ongoing research project by Denver Water to develop a new method for disinfecting newly constructed or
rehabilitated water mains using ozone before they are placed into service in a water distribution system. The limitations of existing chlorine disinfection
practices and the comparative advantages of ozone are discussed. A new flow-
through method for ozone disinfection of water mains is described. The
disinfection efficiency of this method was evaluated in laboratory and pipe loop
field trials, and results are given.
