The quality of analytical data is of utmost importance in determining whether a potential
contamination incident has occurred in a utility's water supply. Proper procedures for
handling samples and managing data must be followed from the moment of notification of
such a potential incident. Sacrificing quality assurance procedures or taking shortcuts can
be tempting in the demand for speed. With a strong quality assurance program in place and
regularly in use, these built-in and practiced procedures will support the unexpected.
Utilities and laboratories collecting, analyzing, or handling special samples from
emergency response situations need to maintain the quality that ensures the validity of
these samples. The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) has
procedures in place should such an incident occur.
