During full-scale water treatment at the Richard Miller Water Treatment Plant in Cincinnati, Ohio this study evaluated the temporal uptake of several molecular weight ranges of natural organic matter (NOM) by two reactivated GACs and by one virgin GAC. One of the reactivated GACs had experienced 12 cycles of water treatment and thermal reactivation, whereas the other reactivated GAC had experienced 5 cycles of water treatment and thermal reactivation. The three GACs possessed very different pore structures. The smallest NOM range (<500 Da) was poorly adsorbed by all three GACs; nevertheless, uptake of this NOM showed a slight correlation to pore volume, with the (microporous) virgin being the most proficient at adsorbing NOM in this range. For all three GACs, the largest NOM (>10,000 Da) were adsorbed more extensively than the other NOM fractions, even though the shear size of this NOM would have precluded it from accessing much of the pore structure. Includes 15 references, table, figures.
