In the United Kingdom (UK), approximately three quarters of all water quality failures reported to the
regulatory authorities relate to discolored supplies, despite major expenditure on pipe renovation.
This paper is based on research that is currently being undertaken for UK Water Industry
Research Ltd (UKWIR) entitled Managing and Controlling Discoloration Incidents and builds
on work previously published in the UKWIR report Hydraulic Characterization of Deposits and
Review of Sediment Modelling. The paper reviews the cause of 170 UK discoloration
incidents that occurred between 1997 and 2001 and presents a risk assessment method that can
be used to target remedial measures cost-effectively. Includes 9 references, tables, figures.
