This paper presents results of a three-year research project by Denver Water to develop a new method for disinfecting new or rehabilitated water mains using ozone before they are placed into service in a water distribution system. The limitations of existing chlorine disinfection practices and the comparative advantages of ozone are discussed. A new flow-through method for ozone disinfection of water mains is described. The disinfection efficiency of this method was evaluated in laboratory, pipe loop and full-scale field trials, and these results are presented in this paper. Includes 5 references, tables, figures.
