This slide presentation outlines information on developing and evaluating protocols for
decontamination of distribution systems following an
intentional contamination event. Topics covered include:
existing decontamination approaches;
case study of a serious intentional contamination episode;
1980 pesticide contamination;
review of historical cross-contamination incidents and system recovery operations; and,
identification of candidate test contaminants based upon physical
and chemical properties (e.g. log Kow). The experimental strategy included two phases. The first involved contaminant adherence testing including the
establishment of experimental / analytical protocols,
and critical test conditions (limited substratum set), and
testing of contaminant suite with a variety of pipe
surfaces. The second phase involved a
lab assessment of chemical decontamination
agents.
