This study was initiated to determine the usefulness of Coli ID agar in recovering chlorine-stressed E. coli and other coliform organisms from drinking water and to compare the results with Tergitol-TTC agar stipulated by European Guideline 98/83 as a reference method. Moreover, the Colilert-18 /Quanti-Tray medium was used. To that end, the study analyzed marginally chlorinated water samples by means of the most probable number method using Colilert- 18 /Quanti-Tray, and the membrane filtration technique using Coli ID and TTC-Tergitol agar, according to ISO 9308- 1:2000 method for coliforms and E. coli. Variance analysis of the data obtained showed statistically significant differences in the coliform counts "confirmed" on Coli ID compared with this of reference method used. The coliform counts on Coli ID from marginally chlorinated water samples were significantly greater (P<0.01) than the corresponding values of the Tergitol-TTC agar and significantly less (P<0.05) than that of Colilert-18 /Quanti-Tray. In this same water, variance analysis of the data also demonstrated the absence of statistically significant differences in the E. coli counts "confirmed" of Coli ID compared with Tergitol-TTC and Colilert-18 /Quanti-Tray. In summary, the Coli ID agar could be used as an alternative method to reference method for detecting and recovering E. coli and other coliform bacteria in treated water. However, Colilert-18 /Quanti-Tray was the most suitable for recovering other coliform bacteria chlorine-stressed non E. coli organisms. Includes 10 references, tables, figures.
