The objective of this study was to develop a method for the detection of a large range of enteric viruses in different kinds of water samples, using a concentration method suitable for the detection of infectious viruses as well as virus RNA. Five methods of concentration of enteric viruses from water and one RNA extraction were selected from the bibliography or developed in a laboratory and then were comparatively evaluated by reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) on one PBS spiked sample. During those preliminary assays, efficiency differences were noticed between the concentration protocols tested. Includes 46 references, tables.
