Water Quality Laboratories are continually being faced with additional workload and new regulatory
requirements, which often require doing more with fewer resources due to tight budget constraints.
Since increasing the Full Time Equivalents (FTE's) human resources was not an option, the
laboratory turned toward laboratory automation to handle the increased workload. The Laboratory
Automation project included creating a detailed request for proposal that was sent to several LIMS
vendors that resulted in the selection of a successful vendor and the subsequent acquisition of a
new Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), integration of our instruments and the
addition of rugged, portable hand held devices for field data collection.
