This paper summarizes the major drinking water-related membrane research activities being
conducted at the NSERC Chair in Water Treatment at the University of Waterloo. These activities
include mechanistic investigations into the removal of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupting
compounds by nanofiltration, the novel use of biofiltration as a membrane pretreatment to reduce
fouling and a comparison of ceramic and polymeric membranes. In addition, research being funded at
various Canadian universities within the framework of a Canadian Water Network project is briefly
summarized. Includes 3 references.
