The objective of this research was to determine the disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation potential (DBPFP) from dissolved organic matter (DOM) isolated from nitrogen-enriched wastewater effluents and algal impacted waters. DOM was isolated and fractionated from five nitrogen-enriched waters, three collected in the field and two generated in the laboratory. Samples were fractionated by size and polarity. In total, 34 isolates were subjected to free chlorine, chloramine, or a combined oxidation DBPFP testing. Emerging nitrogenous DBPs (haloacetonitriles [HANs], halonitromenthanes [HNMs], nitrosamines, and cyanogen halide) were the focus of this study and regulated trihalomethanes (THMs) were also determined to provide a reactivity based comparison. Analytical methods are given for DOM fractionation, DOM dissolution and water quality, and DBPFP and DBP measurements. Includes 11 references, figures.
