This paper presents a new, simple, fast, sensitive, and reliable reversed-phase LC/ESI/MS method for direct analysis of all nine chlorinated and brominated HAAs and several iodinated HAAs. The HAAs can be well separated and detected by the optimized reversed-phase LC/ESI/MS that has been widely used in water quality testing laboratories. In addition, the ESI/MS detection allows the use of isotopically labeled analogs as internal standards, which will provide ultimate compensation for matrix interferences and instrument variations in analyzing HAAs. The method sensitivity, accuracy, precision, and matrix interferences are presented. This highly sensitive and specific method is expected to overcome the four main problems associated with Methods 552.2 and 552.3, and to be able to simultaneously analyze all HAAs in raw and finished drinking waters. The results will be very significant for simultaneously investigating the formation and degradation of all HAAs in drinking water treatment and distribution systems. Includes abstract only.
