Introduction

The incorporation of polypropylene fibres into high grade concrete has been proposed as a method of increasing its fire resistance. Fire tests are being carried out to investigate this. Should polypropylene fibres be used extensively for this purpose, it is important to determine how they will affect structural performance.

The tests reported here were to determine the effect of polypropylene fibres on concrete strength, as determined by the three British Standard strength testing methods1. These tests are:

• Cube compression (BS 1881-115)

• Flexure (BS 1881-118)

• Cylinder splitting (BS 1881-117) These tests are illustrated in Figure 1.

They supply the basic information required in the structural design of concrete components.
