Digests 164 and 165 were published in 1970s. They covered performance, specification and general design issues for clay bricks and appropriate mortars used in a wide range of building elements. Since then markets and products, Codes and Standards have changed and will change further. 'Sustainability' and 'Green' issues increasingly are being advocated as key criteria in the selection of building materials. This part covers appearance, sustainability and environmental issues, and in-service performance of composite brickwork. Lime popping or blowing, lime staining from mortar leaching, efflorescence, iron staining, and other forms of staining are discussed. Criteria, equations and standards for properties such as fire resistance, sound insulation, thermal expansion, moisture expansion, movement, resistance to rain penetration, and thermal performance are briefly covered. A table lists typing and connecting devices for use in masonry walls. Remedial measures for damaged masonry are covered in other digests and these are listed. (Part 1 of Digest 441 covers the main technical issues, especially the specifications and testing of key performance criteria: strength, size, shape and durability in the light of current and future Codes and Standards).
