This method describes a procedure for evaluating the resistance of woven and knitted fabrics to pilling and fuzzing by the random tumble pilling tester method.
This method has been incorporated in CAN/CGSB-4.2 series because it can produce useful results and is being used in the field. Because interlaboratory trials have indicated that the test results are not sufficiently reproducible, this method is not recommended for acceptance testing of commercial shipments. Work to improve the method is being conducted and the resulting improvement will be incorporated when available. The variability of cork liners and the rating of specimens are the causes of some problems.
Some fabrics that have been treated with a silicone resin or other finishes give erroneously low results in this method because some finishes appear to coat the cork liners during testing. If there is suspicion that this may have occurred during the testing of a fabric with an unknown finish, the used liner should be checked with a standard fabric of known pilling performance. A more meaningful result will be obtained for fabrics with certain finishes if they are given an appropriate laundering or dry cleaning treatment prior to testing.
