La presente Norma riguarda gli isolatori portanti per interno ed esterno di materiale ceramico o vetro, esclusi isolatori compositi o portanti in materiale organico, per impianti con tensione nominale maggiore di 1000 V e frequenza non superiore a 100 Hz. In particolare vengono riportati i termini usati, le caratteristiche elettriche e meccaniche e le condizioni in cui vengono verificati i relativi valori, metodi di prova e criteri di accettazione della loro fornitura.
La presente Norma non riporta prescrizioni per la scelta degli isolatori in specifiche condizioni di funzionamento.
La presente Norma può essere utilizzata provvisoriamente anche per isolatori in impianti a corrente continua.
