Volume I, Implementing Critical Success Factors, provides guidance on the implementation and timing of 16 critical success factors (CSFs) for commissioning and startup (CSU), starting with the early planning stages of the project life cycle. Presents barriers to and indicators of CSF achievement, as well as a set of laggard CSFs that require special attention for successful implementation. Discusses CSF links to quality and safety, and to the steps of the CII Planning for Startup model. Provides a CSF checklist and summarizes the learnings from the case study failures presented in detail in Volume II. Lastly, describes the five innovative technologies found by the team to support successful CSU.
Volume II, Mini-Case Studies, summarizes four case studies of CSU failures, providing informative discussions of the failure events, their causes, and the CSFs that would have prevented them.
