Preface

Over the past 15–20 years we have experienced a signifi cant renaissance in our understanding, diagnostic techniques and management of tumors about the head and neck. During the plan for the development of the contents of this atlas it was felt that not only should it provide a comprehensive overview of the common presentations and diagnostic tools available but also select contributors with an experienced understanding of each of the subsites. The authors have been carefully chosen and represent different geographic regions so that a global perspective is obtained. Our appreciation and thanks to all the contributors for providing a remarkable product. As editors we are all familiar with the challenges of a multi-authored book.

The atlas is unique in its design and format. The objective is to provide the reader with an overview of benign and malignant tumors of the upper aero-digestive tract and to employ the current-day approaches using new technology. This practical atlas is intended for surgeons in training, those who are already in practice and as a resource for medical students and those in other specialties.

The atlas is divided into fi ve sections.

SECTION ONE

This section contains a very practical overview that details the advantages and pitfalls in transnasal laryngoesophagoscopy. The chapters within this section are very informative and help the readers understand the challenges of the diagnostic approach and the techniques that minimize patients' discomfort.

SECTION TWO

This section focuses on the analysis and current treatment of both benign and malignant cancers of the nasopharynx, nose/ sinuses, oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx, hypopharynx, trachea, esophagus, and thyroid. The choice of treatment and the options and limitations are dealt with in a very succinct and clear manner. The nuances and philosophies are very cleverly discussed leaving the reader with a thorough understanding of the present day choices.

SECTIONS THREE AND FOUR

These are designed to navigate the most challenging area; however, the addition of well-illustrated descriptions of case examples in each subsite makes these two sections very educational.

SECTION FIVE

This is a potpourri of ablative techniques, reconstructive options, rehabilitation, and fi nally, the current role of chemo/ radiation. The chapters are very comprehensive and attempt to introduce the novice to the limitations and complications of Head and Neck Surgery and in addition, can be of immense benefi t as a reference to the practitioners.

This atlas is the most important and timely overview, in our present knowledge, of both the diagnostic and therapeutic techniques available in present day practice to help enhance the management and outcome of patients with Head and Neck Neoplasms. It is hoped that our readers will benefi t from the information contained in this atlas and that its contents will help to further enhance the quality of patient care and stimulate younger investigators to be innovative.
