PREFACE

The authors of this volume are acknowledged scientists in the field of genetics, plant selection, ecology and agro-economy. They tried to find consensus between natural aspiration for the increase in welfare and overcoming of poverty in a number of countries and the not less natural wish to decrease excess loads on the environment in the majority of agro-developed countries.

The media's attention on the state of the environment at the turn of the millennium has increased significantly, which is manifested an irrational response from many entrepreneurs and officials in many countries of the world, resulting in a multidirectional search for ways of achieving consensus environmentally and socially for technical strategies of sustainable use of natural resources. Among the components of this strategy are arrangements directly connected with the minimization of anthropogenic loads on the one hand and the change of paradigms of the land tenure in the direction of the increase in anthropo-adaptive potential of the cultivated genotypes and technologies on the other hand, with the aim being the rise in agricultural production with simultaneous reduction of unwanted ecological consequences.

The maintenance and extension of biodiversity of cultivated plants on the territories with extreme edaphic-climatic conditions requires the development of new methodic approaches. The formation of the collections taking into account zonal peculiarities will allow providing selective-genetic programs with valuable initial material. Adaptation mechanisms of nutrient uptake and transport can be gained with the help of physiologically active compounds. The application of the contemporary genetic-biotechnical methods allows solving the problem of the extension of the plants biodiversity.
