PREFACE
Mucosal biopsies of the colon, rectum and anus are some of the most frequently encountered specimens in hospital histopathology departments. This revised and updated edition of Biopsy Pathology of Colorectal Disease, builds on the popular first edition. Almost all of the figures are now in colour and the chapters are re-arranged. The book should continue to provide practising pathologists and those in allied disciplines with a thorough guide to the diagnosis of colorectal conditions, both common and rare, and offer expert guidance in the handling of biopsy specimens.
The most valuable information for diagnostic interpretation of the various types of inflammatory disease is presented clearly and succinctly, avoiding the use of non-diagnostic terms such as ‘nonspecific colitis'. Optimal ways of handling and examining polyps as well as biopsies, the assessment of biopsies in motility disorders and the interpretation of biopsies of anal lesions are described. A rational classification and practical approach to dysplasia is presented.
The early chapters describe how to recognize the many different features, both normal and abnormal, which can be regarded as signposts to diagnosis. The significance of these diagnostic signposts is briefly described and cross referenced to later chapters. In these the relevant signposts are amalgamated to describe the histological features of the specific diseases in greater depth. Some of the views expressed are personal opinions.
This book is for hospital pathologists and postgraduate students of histopathology, whether novices or experts. Its size is suitable for use close to the microscope during reporting. It is also a unique source of information for physicians and surgeons with an interest in gastroenterology and proctology; perhaps their compendium for a greater appreciation of the multidisciplinary team biopsy meetings that are now part and parcel of so many gastroenterology departments.
