Preface
Although numerous books about topics in otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery have been published over the years, few, if any at all, directly address clinical applications of computer-based technologies. Of course, some texts discuss computers, but the number of references is small and the references themselves are typically indirect and inconsequential. In light of the enormous impact of computers on medical care (as well as communications, manufacturing, entertainment, etc.), this deficiency seems surprising.
Computer-Aided Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery seeks to fill the gap left by these other publications. This book focuses on the applications of semiconductor-based technologies within clinical otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery. Of course, this text describes present technology; however, this is really a small part of the book. The real focus is on the principles of computer-aided surgery. This approach recognizes current challenges and technological limitations and proposes solutions and strategies based on semiconductorderived systems. Many of the chapters also present visions of clinical care in the distant and not-so-distant future. In these ways, Computer-Aided Otorhinolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery provides a framework for discussions that will guide future developments. This book may also serve as a guide for the further integration of this technology into healthcare delivery.
The primary audience for the book is practicing otolaryngologists who have an interest in computer-aided surgery or are exploring potential applications for computer-aided surgery in their clinical practices. Of course, resident physicians may also find this book very useful. In addition, this book contains information that nurses and other healthcare professionals may need as computer-aided surgery technologies become more prevalent in healthcare delivery. Finally, it is hoped that engineers and other individuals from the commercial sector will learn about the views of practicing physicians who have contributed to this text. The perspectives portrayed in each of the chapters can provide guidance for future technological development and adaptations.
