Preface
Following the successful first edition, it is a great pleasure to present to readers the second edition of the Manual of Hypertension of the European Society of Hypertension. The new edition updates the chapters that are part of the first manual, based on the additional scientific evidence that has been gained in recent years. It also includes new chapters that address the emerging interesting aspects of the pathophysiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of hypertension and related disorders. Attention has also been given to the practical aspects of the management of hypertensive patients in an attempt to make the book useful not only to investigators with an in-depth involvement in the basic and clinical problems in this field of medicine but also to physicians for whom hypertension is an important component of their daily professional activity.
On behalf of the European Society of Hypertension, we wish to express our gratitude to our colleagues who have contributed to the book. We are confident that readers will appreciate their contributions and regard the book as useful in helping to successfully cope with a risk factor that, despite decades of research, continues to remain the number-one cause of death as well as the most important burden of disease worldwide.
