Preface to the second edition

We were pleased with the reception that greeted the first edition of this book. We were, however, a little more critical and felt that although the course, on which the book is based, is fairly comprehensive, the written version did not do it full justice. We have therefore expanded the number of chapters to include those topics, such as Inflammation, shock, detrusor smooth muscle physiology, pathophysiology of bladder dysfunction, urodynamics, biology of cancer and metastasis, molecular genetics and pathology of renal cell carcinoma, principles of chemotherapy, urological and biochemical aspects of transplantation biology, perioperative care of the urological patient, that we thought were missing. We are grateful to both new contributors and also previous ones for reviving their manuscripts.

The scientific basis of urology is changing frighteningly quickly, with new developments in molecular biology and pathophysiology. This makes the task to keep such a book as this up-to-date an increasingly difficult one. We hope that the reader will find this interesting whether he or she is a new reader or someone who read the first edition.
