Preface to the Second Edition
Since the preparation of the first edition protocols for the dosimetry of photons have been issued by the Nordic Association of Clinical Physicists (NACP), the Hospital Physicists' Association and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine ( A A P M ) . Other protocols for electrons have been published by N A C P , A A P M and the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements ( I C R U ) , and protocols for neutrons by both A A P M and European dosimetrists. Also the I C R U is about to publish (early 1985) recommendations of new quantities for use in radiation protection that should help substantially to improve statements of dose equivalent. These important publications have led to appreciable changes in Chapters 9 and 12.
The opportunity has been taken of incorporating a number of helpful suggestions from international correspondents and of making other improvements and minor corrections. Appendices have been added to summarise some details of radiation quantities and the relationships between them. However, I have resisted the temptation to expand the book greatly and run the risk of confusing the reader with detail before the fundamentals have been understood. That detail can be pursued as needed in the references, which have been updated throughout and now number almost 3
