Preface
This book is designed for postgraduate candidates taking the MRCPCH Part 2 clinical exams in the UK and Ireland. It can also be used as reference to many clinical cases when teaching clinical paediatric medicine to undergraduate or postgraduate students. It offers an easily accessible and very comprehensive review of some of the most common cases and a few of the rare ones that one may encounter. All cases are real cases, which have been collected from personal experience while I was working as a consultant in paediatrics over the past seven years.
This book is different from the first edition, 100 Data Interpretation Questions in Paediatrics for MRCPCH/MRCP, which was published in 1999, in that it has four different question styles: best of list, n from many, extended matching questions, and questions to which you have to respond with a written answer. It covers all paediatric specialties, with a little bit more on paediatric neurology as this area is a special interest of mine. The explanation and discussion of the topics is not very long, and most of the time I have tried to use my personal experience as well as covering key information about the topic of the case. I have tried to include the pathophysiology in as many cases as possible, as I find it most exciting and helpful to understand the illness. There are a few unusual cases, such as Aicardi syndrome, which may be described to the candidate as ‘a failure to thrive'.
The book has been divided into ten sections or ‘papers', each of which consists of ten case presentations and between one and four questions relating to each case; answers are given at the end of each paper. Always try to write down on paper your answer to the questions before going on to read the answers and explanation.
This book is a practical study aid for both the written and clinical MRCPCH examinations, giving the reader a variety of different styles of questions with which to test their knowledge. Some of the answers are helpful for paediatricians to use as guidelines for the investigation of many cases. Medical students will learn about clinical paediatrics if they read the cases and their explanations.
As my area of special interest is medical education, I have recently completed my degree in medical education from Imperial College, London (CASLAT). I tried to make this book as clinically oriented as possible and to use the problem-based learning method of getting clinical scenarios related to day-to-day work as well as teaching. I hope you enjoy using this book.
