Preface
In the years since this book was originally published in 1999, a great deal has changed with regard to healthcare information systems. Issues such as the impending deadlines of the HIPAA regulations and the demand for improved healthcare have given organizations many things to consider and implement. Other changes, such as the increased reliance on PDAs, electronic medical records, and decision support systems, have allowed, and will allow in the future, greater ease in providing quality healthcare. As much as healthcare organizations depend on information technology to offer services, it must remain a core competency of the organization. Healthcare organizations must now, more than ever, embrace information technology as a standard part of doing business and regularly educate themselves on how to best implement new initiatives. When integrated properly, information technology can provide solutions to the increased demands for quality, efficiency, and improved workflow to help streamline healthcare operations. This book presents insight into the myriad of healthcare information technologies and associated regulatory controls that can be leveraged to assist with administrative processes, clinical decision making, and other complexities that the healthcare industry will face moving forward.
