Preface
The Historical Atlas of Immunology chronicles the metamorphosis of immunology with the aid of numerous photographs and illustrations that depict major persons and events responsible for pivotal advances in the development of the modern and eclectic science of immunology.
Following each historical account is a section in shaded boxes that presents the current status of knowledge on that topic for those unfamiliar with the field. It is our hope that this approach will make the publication attractive not only to immunologists, but to other scientists and lay-persons alike with an appreciation for the history of science and medicine.
Beginning with the origins of immunology in antiquity, the book is divided into chapters as shown in the Contents. The development of key concepts and theories that stimulated an exponential increase in scientific research has culminated in a critical mass of data that intersect all aspects of biomedical science. Immunology has relevance for many other branches of medical science ranging from transplant surgery to molecular biology. To appreciate the current status of knowledge in the field, one needs to understand the pathfinders and events that led to an improved understanding of immunology, perhaps the most fascinating of all contemporary scientific research. Not only students, but researchers, physicians, investigators in related fields and even nonscientists should find the development of immunological concepts a scientific adventure worth reading. To appreciate the present, we must not forget the past. This book should fulfill that need for those interested in immunology today.
