PREFACE
This book series is aimed at senior undergraduates and graduates studying or researching drug targeting and delivery. It will address critically current areas of exploration and concern. The series will cover delivery systems and their characterization in vitro and in vivo, techniques such as microencapsulation (Volume 1), as well as discussing the vital biological issues of tissue and organ targets and their nature. Themes such as novel carrier systems, newer and potential responsive or pulsatile systems, or systems such as liposomes (Volume 2) which have a longer pedigree, will be addressed as will topics such as modes and routes of delivery and access to extravascular sites of colloidal carriers and macromolecular complexes and their penetration into tumours, inflamed tissues or other organ or tissue targets. The issue of penetration enhancers will be dealt with in Volume 3. Later volumes will encompass topics such as the delivery of endogenous hormones, lymphokines and cytokines, a re-evaluation of the oral route of drug delivery, macromolecular absorption, vaccine design and delivery, and new materials for dosage form design and fabrication. The word drug is to be interpreted broadly and the series will include coverage of oligonucleotide delivery and gene therapy in as far as these involve common problems of overcoming cellular barriers, selectivity and targeting as well as function in biological environments.
