Preface

In preparing Mastering the DRCOG, I have chosen to present information in a way that directly addresses your learning needs as you prepare for the Diploma examination of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. I have tailored the book around the syllabus so as to equip you with all the information you need in order to pass the DRCOG examination, first time around, and to pass it well.

Essentially, I am writing for medical practitioners who are undergoing specialist training in general practice; doctors who intend to provide primary obstetric and gynaecological care in the UK. However, pioneering medical students and nurse specialists will also find this book invaluable, both as a reference book and for learning, as will doctors working outside the UK. By gaining the Diploma award, you will have the bonus of securing a valuable certification; an achievement that is not easy, but certainly well worthwhile and highly respected. With the diploma award will come the knowledge and confidence required to practice safely and effectively, looking after women and their special needs within the primary care setting.

This book contains a healthy mix of facts, figures and references, presented simply and clearly, in a way that is designed to facilitate your learning. I have used tables to simplify data wherever feasible, and to make facts as digestible as possible to help you learn, as well as make it easy for you to look things up quickly during a consultation. Simple line diagrams are used throughout, so as to explain pictorially the principles that perhaps before confounded you. I find that pictures are also great when explaining concepts to patients, who are genuinely appreciative of the time you take to explain their body to them.

The DRCOG award, being an undoubtedly worthwhile achievement, in such an interesting, challenging and changing area of medicine, made it a real joy for me to prepare for, and I want you to pass it too.The syllabus has both breadth and depth but, at the same time, does not go into unnecessary specialist detail. It is down-to-earth and practical.Working as a full-time NHS GP in London, I have found that having the DRCOG, and the understanding of gynaecology and obstetrics that comes with the certification, absolutely invaluable. Having the DRCOG is useful proof of competence when applying for jobs (whether that be salaried GP posts, partnerships, locums, staff grade hospital appointments, or community women's health clinics). DRCOG certification may allow you to work as a GPwSI (GP with specialist interest) depending on local need, or to enter the private sector. You may be able to run a fertility, or heavy menstrual bleeding, clinic for your area. There are so many opportunities available to you with this award, and such a high and constant need for well trained doctors, that there is nothing possible that you can loose by taking this step.

I very much hope that my excitement for the subject is shared with you as you make your way through these pages, and that on gaining the DRCOG, by reading my book, many a door is opened to you! I wish you all the very best and happy reading!
