Preface
World wide the population is aging and the number of elderly women is increasing with an inversion of the population pyramid. This will have a major impact on the provision of healthcare services as more women are living independently of their families who had been previously relied on. Both of us are passionate that women's health should be evidence based. This book was conceived when we first met in Oxford and felt that there was a gap in the literature with no readily accessible information for health care professionals.
The approach is holistic covering demographics, climate change, common medical conditions, gynecological problems and delivery of health care. The authors are international to provide a wide focus.
Rereading all the page proofs was not a chore; rather it was a treat, because it reaffirmed the value of our original decision to produce this volume. We have, with the help of the authors of the various chapters, brought together a great deal of useful information about the medical conditions that are prominent in women over the age of 70 and the best approaches to treat them. In this regard, the book will be useful because it is a comprehensive overview of the subject, probably the first of its kind.
The readers will be presented with evidence, the best that is available on the topics that represent the main chapter titles. The reader will also be enlightened where evidence is poor or lacking and where research is desperately needed.
All in all, we believe that this book fulfills our plan and expectation, that is, to gather the available evidence about treating a variety of conditions in women over 70 into one useful compendium. We hope that readers will agree.
