Since the first textbook dedicated to molecular epidemiology was published (1), there have been enormous advances in science and biotechnology that have been exploited by molecular epidemiologists to understand human disease. The human genome has been largely characterized. There have been significant advances in the ability to interrogate inherited and somatic genetic variability as well as other biomarkers in relation to disease risk.
