Preface

MRSA continues to be in the medical and public headlines. New information and clarification of old information are occurring in the medical literature on a daily basis. This is exemplified by the need to rapidly update the first edition. Despite the first edition being published in 2008, we felt that enough new information regarding MRSA had become available and that a second edition was essential and required. All authors agreed with a very rapid turnaround time for each of their chapters and all achieved their goals. This second edition has been compiled within nine months, providing the reader with the latest up-to-date ground-breaking information in the field.

Each day it seems I am confronted with another patient with MRSA disease. Additionally, infection control practices are being rewritten as MRSA continues to increase within medical communities. We have added new chapters that address the new concerns raised by MRSA and its myriad of presentations and challenges. These new chapters include a review of device infections, a discussion of MRSA resistance, and another with current information on preventive measures. All other chapters have been updated and collated keeping the information consistent and current.

Once again, I sincerely thank all the authors who were kind enough to contribute to this text. I believe we have a concise book aimed at helping clinicians everywhere understand MRSA and its ramifications. I still believe that MRSA is not completely understood by any of us. Attempting to get current information into the hands of clinicians who face these problems everyday seems to be the best way to serve our patients and our health care communities.
