PREFACE
Radioactive materials have become a major environmental and workplace concern to a growing group of natural resource, medical, and manufacturing industries. Many mineral extraction and processing industries generate wastes that contain concentrated Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM). Recent attention has focused onthe potential adverse environmental effects and human health hazards due to NORM. Several states have recently established regulations for the safe management of NORM. One of the fundamental tools for ensuring regulatory compliance and protecting personnel and the environment is training both management and staff in appropriate practices for NORM waste management, identification, and handling. Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM): Principles and Practices is intended to serve as a stand-alone review and course text for workers exposed to NORM and professionals responsible for NORM-related safety and waste management.
This text is also designed to support the course and credential programs in radiation safety and NORM management provided by the National Environmental Management and Education Center (NEMEC) and the National Registry of Environmental Professionals (NREP).
