Preface
Never was there a subject in the field of sports nutrition that has commanded more attention, interest and speculation than the topic of nutritional ergogenic aids. Often, pursuit of the intricacies of this topic has generated more heat than light. There is a vast number of ergogenic aids to consider; however, we have focused on the more common ones and assembled a roster of the best authors to discuss individual nutritional ergogenic aids. The first chapter in the book deals expertly with definitions and regulatory issues. The nutritional ergogenic aids are then divided into three broad categories to facilitate logical coverage: amino acid derivatives, lipid derivatives and other substances in foods not classified as essential. A chapter on the systematic and critical evaluation of benefits and possible risks of nutritional ergogenic aids follows. Hopefully, this volume will provide the reader and researcher with a reference book on the subject, a summary of the latest results and a possible basis for consensus. Sports nutritionists, sports medicine and fitness professionals, researchers, students, health practitioners and the informed layman will find this book timely and useful.
